So, you’re thinking about starting Functional Fitness… Good. Let’s start by talking about this scary brand Functional Fitness. Functional Fitness is a great brand but they did not exactly invent high intensity training using functional movements…which is really all it is. So before those famous words come out of your mouth saying “Functional Fitness..?? I can’t do Functional Fitness” Just know it has been done many times over just not under the brand we all now know.
Here is what to expect when you walk in for the first time. Expect to walk in and if they’re in the middle of a WOD (Workout Of the Day) it will seem like utter and complete chaos. You will wonder how you talked yourself into even stepping foot in the door. Hopefully, a coach or someone will have grabbed you before you could run out and introduced themselves to you. Do not assume this is a coach, this is most likely a random member of the box (what crossfitters call their gym). Functional Fitness boxes will generally have some of the nicest and supportive people you will ever meet. Remember Functional Fitness is still generally new and relatively small in the world of fitness, so most of the people you meet will still be in their first year or 2 of starting and will recognize quickly the scared and confused look on your face. The hundreds of people I have had through my doors over the years will usually lose that face quickly after meeting a few people and will wonder what the hell took them so long to come in and check it out.
Once you get through all the pleasantries you will undoubtedly say, “I’ve never done this before so I don’t know any of these movements”. Any half decent Functional Fitness will have their own form of onramp or fundamentals class where they will teach you at least the basic mechanics of the main lifts. Worried you won’t pick them up fast enough? Worry not, the coach will scale the workout and/or movement to your ability. For example if you can’t do the scary overhead squat then you may front squat. Can’t do that, then you goblet squat, then air squat, then squat to a bench, then partial squat… the list goes on and on.
In closing, my advice to you is to ignore your nerves that are trying to talk you out of it. Go in there, try the free trial, and see what you think. In most cities, there are several options when it comes to Functional Fitness gyms so why not try a few. They all seem to have their own style and vibe, so find the one that matches you and fall in love with the community. In polling my members several times over the years I always ask, “What keeps you coming back day after day?” They always say community. It’s the people, so when you’re there be a grown up and introduce yourself, get to know a few people and find a new second home.
